Types of Sifat
By Muhammad Hassan ·
There are two types of Sifat: Permanent Sifat and Temporary Sifat. In this blog, we’ll explore the types of Permanent Sifat. There are two types of Permanent Sifat:
🔹 Sifat with Opposites
🔹 Sifat without Opposites
Let’s begin with Sifat with Opposites.
There are five pairs of opposite characteristics — which means there are ten Sifat in total, and they always exist in pairs. These are:
- Hams (breathy) vs Jahr (strong)
- Shiddah (strong stop) vs Rikhwah (soft flow)
- Isti‘laa (elevated tongue) vs Istifaal (lowered tongue)
- Itbaaq (compression) vs Infitaah (openness)
- Idhlaaq (quick/light) vs Ismaat (heavier, fuller)
Every single Arabic letter will have one characteristic from each pair.
For example, the letter ق (Qaaf) is always heavy, which means it has the Sifat of Isti‘laa — andnot Istifaal.
Sifat without Opposites
There are 7 Sifat without Opposites:
- Al-Safeer (الصفير - Whistling )
- Al-Qalqala (القلقلة - Bouncing / Echoing)
- Al-Leen (اللين - Softness / Ease)
- Al-Inhiraaf (الانحراف - Inclination)
- Al-Takreer (التكرير - Repetition )
- Al-Tafashi (التفشي - Diffusion / Spreading )
- Al-Istitaalat (الاستطالة - Elongation )
We will discuss all the Sifat in upcoming Blogs until then stay tuned.
