What is Tajweed, and can it be learned online?
Tajweed is the set of rules governing how each letter and word of the Quran is pronounced. It can be learned online, but only with a teacher who listens: the rules can be read in a book, while correct pronunciation has to be heard and corrected live, which is what one-on-one video classes provide.
Recite the Quran the way it was revealed
Our Tajweed course teaches you the precise articulation points (makharij) and rules of recitation so you can read the Quran in its authentic form, guided by experienced Qaris and Qari'aat one-on-one.
What You'll Learn
- Correct pronunciation of Arabic letters and their articulation points
- Characteristics of all letters (Which letter we have to read heavy or light).
- Rules of Noon Sakinah, Tanween, Meem Sakinah and Madd
- Practice reciting with proper rhythm, pace and pauses (waqf)
- Personalized feedback on every recitation session
- Certificate of completion when you finish the course

Frequently Asked Questions
You should be able to read basic Arabic letters. If you're an absolute beginner, we recommend starting with our Qaida course first.
Tajweed course outline
The course follows the classical order in which Tajweed has always been taught: first the letters, then the rules that change them, then applying everything in real recitation. You move to the next level when your teacher hears that you are ready.
Level 1: Makharij and Sifaat
Where every Arabic letter is pronounced (its makhraj) and the characteristics that make similar letters sound different, such as Qaaf and Kaaf, or Seen and Saad.
Read: What is Makharij? →Level 2: Noon, Meem and Ghunnah
The rules of Noon Sakinah and Tanween (Izhar, Idghaam, Iqlaab and Ikhfaa), the rules of Meem Sakinah, and holding the ghunnah for its correct length.
Read: Makhraj of Noon →Level 3: Madd, Qalqalah and heavy letters
How long to stretch each type of vowel, the echoing sound of the qalqalah letters, and when letters such as Raa and the Laam in the name of Allah are heavy or light.
Level 4: Stopping and starting (Waqf)
Where you may stop in a verse, how to stop on a word correctly, and where to begin again so that the meaning is preserved.
Applied recitation
Reciting longer passages with every rule applied naturally, at a steady pace, so Tajweed becomes part of how you read rather than something you think about.
Assessment and certificate
When you complete the course, your teacher assesses your recitation and you receive a certificate of completion from Quranic Ways Online.
How a Tajweed lesson works
1. Warm-up recitation
You recite a passage you have practised, and your teacher listens for the rules covered so far.
2. A new rule, explained simply
Your teacher explains one rule at a time with clear examples from the Quran, so you understand both what to do and why.
3. Live correction
You recite the examples and your teacher corrects your pronunciation on the spot, repeating until it is right.
4. Practice for the week
You finish with a short set of verses to practise before the next class, focused on the rule you have just learned.
Who this Tajweed course is for
Adults who can already read
You can read the Quran but you know your recitation isn't quite right. The course fixes the mistakes you may have carried for years, patiently and privately.
Beginners who have finished Qaida
If you have just learned to read, Tajweed is the natural next step. Starting now means good habits from the beginning. If you can't yet read Arabic, start with Noorani Qaida.
Start with Noorani Qaida →Children and teenagers
Older children who read fluently can take the course with lessons adjusted to their age, often alongside memorising surahs.
Learning Tajweed with a teacher vs on your own
Free videos and articles are a great way to understand the rules, and we publish our own. But knowing a rule is different from applying it correctly, and you can't hear your own mistakes the way a teacher can.
Learning on your own
Books, apps and videos can teach you the names and definitions of the rules. They are useful for revision, but they can't tell you whether the Qaaf you just recited came from the right place.
Read: Qaf vs Kaf →Learning with a teacher
Tajweed has always been passed on by listening and reciting to a qualified teacher. In live one-on-one lessons, your teacher hears every letter and corrects it before a mistake becomes a habit.
